What to do?

Create a manga set in the Drowtales universe. Write the story, decide what it is about, any theme is fine. In the end what matter is how you present your story that will affect your chances to win

How will the entries be judged?

This year the winning entry will be selected on the basis of what we beleive will be the most entertaining to the drowtales readers. Some art style/media are more difficult to use and thus give a more unique feel but will not necessarily make artworks that will be more pleasing to most readers. Same for the story, strike to please the existing readers with something accurate yet new.

FAQ:

-Can i use the past years stories and draw them?

Answer: No. Only new entries will be accepted.

-I do not know what the characters in the story look like, where can I get a reference?
Answer: Via moonless age and the other stories. Most of the characters mentioned in the stories are existing ones, but you may request concept arts of those existing characters. In this case you may email me (kern@drowtales.com) and request the concept art of the characters you need. Note that we do not have concept arts for everything. Also, any new characters or generic characters have to be made up by you, the artist, using the drowtales world setting as a base.

-What if I need an extension?
answer: You have to contact me and request the extension before the fifth december.

-Why are you doing this contest?
answer: To discover new talents. Drowtales need skilled and dedicated artists to grow. If you wish to get our attention for a job in the studio, this is definitely the best way to show your skill and creativity.

-English isn’t my native language. Will my spelling reduce my chances?
Answer: Drowtales is made of a team of international artists. Most of us do not have english as a native language, so we can understand the issue. If you worry about your grammar , you can request proofreaders help via our forums.

-I’m good at drawing but not at coloring. What should I do?
Answer: Go to our manga forum and request assistance from other artists. Or post your project information here in a comment along with your contact info so that another may find you. But, while coloring is a good thing, you can submit a black and white entry. One such entry won third place in the past.

-Can I create my own characters and make a story about them in this contest?
Answer:Yes but do not stray too far from Moonless age or your story may be unrecognizable to the judges. It happened in the past. In this case you’d be certain to lose.

-Can my entry have nudity and gore?
Answer: Yes, though we reserve the right censor it if needed. Moonless age featured its share of gore in the past and a limited amount of tame nudity.

-If i win, does that make my story canon?

Answer: No. It will remain fanwork and one day will be moved from the main archive to the side story archive.

    ALRIGGGGGHHHHHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. AuroraDragonKaya Says:

Does this mean that the stories from previous years that WEREN’T made into comics can’t be used either? :(
Damn, I was really hoping to finish up and spiffify that entry I never completed in time. :(

  3. kern Says:

The only story that wasn’t made into a comic was Minka’s love. If it is the one, then maybe you have a chance. Else everything else would be a repetition of something existing and that would reduce your chance to win to zero.

  4. Ari Mae'yukir Says:

Was “Mae’yukir initiation” made into comic to? I don’t remember that it been.

  5. kern Says:

Ari: Don’t use the past years stories. Think of your own if you wish to win. My previous comment was so AuroraDragonKaya existing work don’t go to waste.

  6. Wiseman Says:

I’m on it, better to get familiar with all the mith of the moonless age ò_O!

  7. Razara Says:

    Woo! Manga contest fun-time!

“Entertaining” is a rather broad term. Would a well written humor fanfiction be more desirable in this contest than one with a serious plot, or would both ends of the spectrum be considered “entertaining”?

  8. AuroraDragonKaya Says:

It was indeed Minka’s love, I guess I lucked out. :)
My friend and I really wanted to finish that comic, so it’s nice to know we’ll be able to. This will be during finals week, but I’m gonna start work on Minka’s Love comic now.
Maybe if we finish I can think about making something of my own, but I’d rather make that comic as nice as possible.
    Thanks, Kern! :D

  9. Nikkoru-san Says:

Can we collaborate? I’m not great at colouring, but I know someone who is. Could we work together and still win?

  10. Finn MacCool Says:

yes and yes. (it’s answered in the faq above.)

what i wonder about is how the subscriptions and books would be shared if a team was to win.

  11. AuroraDragonKaya Says:

I believe the splitting of prizes between collaborators is the responsibility of the collaborators themselves to figure out.
Make sure you (the collaborators) have a plan and agree to it BEFORE hand, so that if you DO win, there’s no hard feelings or infighting. ;)

  12. Wiseman Says:

Razara, i think that when they said entretaining they mean something that would like to the readers of drowtales, something interesting, like Tsugumi Oba said in bakuman: if it’s interesting then it get’s published.

  13. Toz Says:

I’m so excited! Now I just need to come up with a story and hope I don’t prcrastinate o_o
