Drowkaki was finally upgraded to Poteto 5.1 then to Wax Poteto. A much needed upgrade after so many years without change and with all these bugs plaguing us. We had to trash our custom MODS but it seem that wax poteto include some of the stuff we had. Avatar(go in your profile) and picture uploading. It also come with some new features as well. The most important one is to be able to re-touch everything, including SHI-PAINTER pictures , non animated oekaki and uploaded stuff. I'm sorry we didn't do this upgrade sooner. Now the board is pretty much lifeless, but i hope now that approving new accountsl became optional, that some life will return around here on this fantasy-only oekaki board.

Kaiera @ Monday, February 7th 2005, 3:29 AM
My newest character: Felix the Drow. Personally, I think his story is quite interesting.....involving the death of his love and him searching his own soul following her death. I liked the couple, but I decided to kill her 'cause I'm sadistic :D I love a sad love story. Anyway, the necklace he wears has her ring on it. He never takes it off. Now, he's just looking at the sky for some reason. Thinking I suppose. The bg is totally random......heh. The coloring....I was just playing around.

KHatch @ Monday, February 7th 2005, 4:08 AM
I really like his flowy hair and the sad expression on his face. The mouth and eye really convey his emotion. I like it a lot!

darkrose @ Monday, February 7th 2005, 5:03 AM
Cool! I love the background, it reminds me of tie-dye. Nice job with the shading and folds, and his hair is particularly well done. Excellent work overall. The little details like the necklace and the collar really make this piece, well done.

olsie @ Monday, February 7th 2005, 11:52 AM
Well crap! (That his love died) The BG can be of something burning I suppose; that's what it most reminds me of...
And he could look above; because he would always look at the stars w/ his lover? It would make him very sad everytime he looked at the night sky everytime after her death. Sounds like a cliche thought; but this picture makes that lil mini story in mah head xD
The highlight that looks alittle out of place compared to the others is the one on his shoulder, because it seems to be in the wrong direction. and A highlight on his cheek would look right too. :)
I like the look he's givin' off; you are getting better and better at profiles :)

Kamourian King @ Monday, February 7th 2005, 11:00 PM
awww my stories are like that too XP i love the sky ^^ and the ring/ necklace reminds me of my story... (( but its a lockett, not a ring ^^;))

Karasu @ Tuesday, February 8th 2005, 12:40 AM
well, though you say that the background is random, it so happens to be my fav. part here in this picture! I think that maybe you could have done just a littttttle better on the shading of the shirt, but otherwise I really like this. What a sad story though!

catboi incubus mishi @ Tuesday, February 8th 2005, 3:00 PM
He's so pretty. :) Poor little guy, havin' his girlfriend die.. I really love the colors here, although I think perhaps the lighter green could have been a little darker. Wow, I hope that made sense. His shirt is just like the one I'm wearing today, except mine is black with stripes on the collar. x) Like Olsie said, you're getting a LOT bnetter with profiles and that's exciting - I love seeing artists I like improving! Yay! :D I love love love his hair. <3333 I also just the background, it almost looks like he's looking at the Aurora Borealis. I probably spelled that wrong. Keep up the good work, Kaiera! <3

Totenmaske @ Wednesday, February 9th 2005, 7:07 AM
Kaiera, there is always some kind of ?sick? fascination with tragic tales of lost love ? though saying that, I too have a rather guilty pleasure of enjoying pieces that actually work the sense of emotional lose into characters. Though it always tends to be the girlfriend that is lost in quite a few character tragedies ? which somewhat hits home on so many merits for a few people ? thus bringing a little more emotion to a piece than what is truly there. But overall the impact of the back-story really delivers in this image and this character, Kaiera, presents to the viewer a rather wonderful piece.

Particularly in the colouring in which you bring out the sunken/sorrowful look to his face. I love the lighting to his dark skin and the slight lack of colouring in the eye to give that slight ?wet look? (lack to me is the fact that you didn?t complete the pupil) which is such a nice little touch of realism the sense of emotion in the image. The fold work in this image is rather nicely done ? though for some reason I always think green comes across too plastic like when you go into lighting (not you in general, just solid hues of green tend to create a rather odd effect when doing lighting on fabric ? from personal experience as well as what I view here). But clothing wise everything seems fine, and the thick fabric that is used to hang the ring around his neck is a nicely done in deforming the collar of his shirt. The ring though seems a little deformed? maybe you could work that into the story of how she died? slight distortion of the ring and the way she ?passed on.?

Killing off characters seems to be something people do, even though at times we find that we need to return reestablish the dead character ? mostly in some kind of ploy of rendering a moment before they died, and that is something I recommend you do Kaiera ? show us a moment before she died, that would be interesting. Other than that little personal comment, I think you did a wonderful job overall in this image ? particularly in colouring the hair, it is so hard to work shading on white hair. The background though something you just did, is very pleasing, and frankly something I particularly love a lot about this image. Though I particularly like everything about this image ? the line art, the colouring, the character?s emotion. Wonderful post, I hope to see more ;3

Prismatic @ Thursday, February 10th 2005, 10:03 AM
Felix.. yaay! Even though the background is so random I think it's great. I love the mixture of colors.
The shadowing and highlights on his shirt are really nice. In fact, the solid shading is pretty great. Nice profile~ And the coloring of his hair is really pretty.

Right, well I\'ll get back to this probably tomorrow. It\'s gaming night, time to take off... but I didn\'t want to lose what I had. This will eventually be the Dark Goddess Loriana from my world, I haven\'t yet decided if she\'s wearing a mask or if she\'s just adjusted her face to be metallic <{^.^}>. Any comments or helpful tips would be appreciated now while I still have room to change things!

Yay! Done! Took a rather different turn than I had expected... but I did her hair and then the stars just begged to be put in, and it kind of went from there. So yah, any comments helpful. Loriana, Goddess of Darkness and Mother of Night.

Holy crap! Very very nice; the colors of the shades and highlights are perfect so far! :D

Starisan @ Monday, February 7th 2005, 3:17 PM
Great on the coloring, I could believe that it is her real face...If you think of it in terms of dawn being young and new, rebirth and night being the final stage of a day. I like the stars in her hair, my only comment would be that the day looks a little too bright to be heading into evening.

Karasu @ Tuesday, February 8th 2005, 12:41 AM
wow! How creative! I really love this, a lot! Since i live in new mexico, I should say that this is very southwestern themed. : ) you did a good job here on the shadng, but I think the eyes could have used a little more depth....the sunset is just gorgeous though! and I love the stars in the hair : )

Cai @ Tuesday, February 8th 2005, 11:11 PM
The metallic look of the mask/face is very very nice, though the shift from blue to gray to blue (forehead/upper face to lower face to chin) is a bit awkward. The night sky in her hair looks beautiful, though.

Her eyes also seem a bit unfocused for some reason. But overall, I'm impressed - I couldn't do something with watercolors like this. ^.^

Totenmaske @ Friday, February 11th 2005, 5:20 AM
Just to let you know darkrose, I?ve archived this image last night simply because I was really impressed with the overall look of this ? sorry about not getting to commenting in a timely fashion though. That being said I must say the reason I really like this image, is the fact that she reminds me of the ?Robot? in Fritz Lang?s Metropolis. There was a comment I thought, that said something about the way the transition of the faces blue seemed a little off ? but I don?t see it now for some reason, but I have to agree that there seems to be that kind of effect ? plus the eye seems a little out of proportion on the ?dawn/sunset? side of the canvas which gives it a rather wonky look mainly due to that eye. But still that does not mean that this image is anything other than exceptional.

That being said, I really like the overall look of the skyline, especially the nice cloud work is rather realistic with the way you have eased the overall look? not concentrating on fluffy clouds you seem to go with the more subtle indication of wispy work, which in my eye seems more realistic. The little sunlight rays are nice, as well. Frankly the image itself is impressive in this area more than anything else.

I also like the fact of the stars in her hair, truly come across as the coming of night. Everything seems to work wonderfully, except for the wonky aspect the eyes bring to the table not to mention that the more I look at it, the red lips seem to be a little too much colour for the scene ? taking away somewhat of the feel overall on canvas. But this I personally think is just my preference ? if you did the lips and eyes as you did the face (with that skin effect) I think the actual sense of transposing the two elements of night and day could have been brought further into the end product. But overall this is a fantastic image darkrose, hope to see more of the same attention to detail of the skyline as well as the face in general in your future images!

Prismatic @ Friday, February 11th 2005, 9:16 PM
This is a really beautiful piece of art. I'm loving it. Your use of color is so marvelous.
I really like the way it seems she's rolling in the night as the sun sets. Sort of reminds me of when Apollo rides his chariot to make the sun rise~ The stars in her hair are really pretty. She really does seem to be partially made up of the night sky.
The highlights and shading in her face are so good. There's so much depth there, she really does seem to be three dimensional. The softness of teh background is wonderful as well! I particualry like the rays of light coming from the sun.~~

Ikena @ Sunday, February 13th 2005, 4:45 PM
ooh nice! I must admit she kinda scares me tho!
I really like the colorings on the face, it looks so metallic! =3
the bg is simple but nice i like it!

darkrose @ Monday, February 14th 2005, 11:25 PM
Right. Girl. I knew that. This came out fantastic, the pose is excellent and the shading/lineart is so smooth.. the strands of hair are captivating, and the epression is quite amusing. It's your hands that really stand out to me, though... they're just amazing. The hands and the anatomy of her back, both. My only comment would be something about the back arm, how it folds. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it seems somehow not right... dang, wish I could be more helpful, say something other than 'wow' but I guess it just wasn't meant to be <{^.^}>

Starisan @ Tuesday, February 15th 2005, 2:13 PM
OOO, this i seriouly awesome and creepy. I really like the position, you did a very good job with perspective on the limbs. I think the tufts t the end of the ears are a nice touch because they keep the color scheme going and the eyes moving.

Prismatic @ Sunday, February 20th 2005, 1:35 AM
Yaay you added a background! Really nice one even. The planks fit so well together~
Absolutly wonderful job on the shading. You always do a great job on that, but this one is particualry well done... as well as terrific line work. Her hair is magnificant. I really love the pose as well! Her anatomy is great~

Queen_Godzilla @ Saturday, March 5th 2005, 1:10 AM
I tried to check, but I couldn't find anything, so... I'll just go with what I can assume here. I am currently assuming that Verre is a girl. (I know that Sakmet is. Holy jibblies, maybe Verre IS a guy? I dunno!)

Well, if Verre was/is a girl you SHOULD be able to see part of her breast between her chin and her shoulder there. It's because gravity and her posture would cause breasts to fall forward. Now, I know you don't want to make it outright porn, but... eh.

And if it's not a girl, then... just keep that tidbit for future reference XD

Other than that... DAMN. XD You're putting a lot of work into the hair and the floor. Good job! I really, really love the hair -- it's my favorite color and it's really shiny too.

I always liked how you did eyes.

Very predatory pose. X3

Watching the animation I have to admit I really love the little details that you put in the rough sketch of her ? I think some of the details though have been a little lost with the thick line art ? especially the Cthulhu little shoulder embroidery which seems to have lost its tentacles. Now I know this isn?t finished so I?ll withhold any further comment, but I have to say I really like the background you have going ? the wonderful softness and the way you rendered the stars is very pleasing indeed. Keep up the good work!

catboi incubus mishi @ Friday, February 4th 2005, 2:39 PM
First of all, I just loooove the lighting effect here, they're so pretty and swirly. <333 I like her boots, they're quite cute - but oh my, is that her butt? O: Her lower legs look a little disconnected from her upper legs. ;\ I like her little dress, but like Toten was saying, the thick lineart sort of takes away from the magical feel. O: But my favorite favorite part, moreso than the swirlies, is her STAFF. O: It's so pretty and I just love it. The light coming off of it is very pretty and yay. Good job, keep up the good work! :D

celestial crou @ Friday, February 4th 2005, 11:34 PM
I like the staff. You put a lot of detail in it. so it just beggs for complements. The pose the the girl is nice and anotomically correct. But it lacks the attention to detail that the staff got. The eyes seem a little off. One higher then the other. The hair is pretty too! The wavy layered look complemented with the varying colors of shade / highlight.. Very nice. The BG really brings out the hair and glove. Nice job wot the orb too. SHINY!

darkrose @ Friday, February 4th 2005, 11:53 PM
wow... yup, yay details! I love the staff, and the shoes are awesome. Her shoulders seem a little bit off, like they're not quite attatched to her body, but other than that the anatomy looks very sound. Her expression is very nice, very calm, and the background is mystical but also muted in color adding to the quiet feel. I really likes it!

Kari Maxwell @ Saturday, February 5th 2005, 12:23 AM
I like the staff most. The only thing that looks odd to me is her shoulders. They seem a little too high and too rounded. Perhaps lowering the one that is not holding the staff would help. It may be the absense of seeing her neck that does it. I don't know. -shrugs- Nice colours. Love the flowing blues and blacks in the background.

olsie @ Saturday, February 5th 2005, 4:01 AM
The hair and the stuaff would be my two favorite things about this picture :o
The cold feeling of the sky and the magic brings in some extra mood; and so does the shine at the end of the staff! It's awesome! Her costume rocks btw :D
The only crit I would have to give is that the ears could be slightly lower. :) They are too high where they are currently. She also has one too many fingers :o

Starisan @ Monday, February 7th 2005, 3:19 PM
AWWW, this is sweet, I think the background rocks the world, I also love the glow of the staff, my only question would be is she wearing a turtle neck? Other then that I love this, cute face.

Karasu @ Tuesday, February 8th 2005, 12:43 AM
Oh, the mist here in the picture is just breathtaking, as wel as the color/shading you chose to do....but, I feel the face could use a little bit more definition...the part of the face by the ear on our right. Other than that, I think this is really well done, but my opinion here doesnt mean much lol

I love the subtle change of tone in his skin. And the little shiney on his lip~ His eyes in particular are really well done. The dark lines about them really make them stand out.
The colors in the sky are beautiful. It really seems to be a bright afternoon or some such. Makes joining him even more appealing~

catboi incubus mishi @ Friday, February 4th 2005, 2:28 PM
I really really like his hair, it's so pretty and the blue is just lovely. <3 I think you could have shaded the white with some light grey, but that's just me. Oh wait, no, it's a bandana, right? Then you should have done some distinction between the two - perhaps make the bandana a light grey, because afterall, white doesn't stay pure on the sea for too long. x3; I think you could have blended the colors in his skin a little more, they look a bit blotchy right now. My absolute favorite part of this are his eyes, they're so piercing and a pretty color of olive. <3

olsie @ Friday, February 4th 2005, 10:13 PM

Karasu @ Tuesday, February 8th 2005, 12:45 AM

Wow, is the timer right? *pokes*

Anyway, yesh, another sketch. This one is my Drow character, Ydrah'Ska. When she was young, she got attacked by a monster. The creature drove her totally insane and ripped half of her face. Her family, hoping she might recover one day, casted a guadian (her hair changing in snake) to look over her. Sadly, she became more and more crazy, and killed her whole family.

Q: Another sketch?
A: Huh, yeah, I wanted to see if I could try something with the layers, and it worked. ^-^

Q: But still, you have two unfinished sketches.
A: I, huh,... Know. Your point?

Q: You're just a procrastinator who can't finish her pics!!! Sue you!
A: Yes, I love you too. Now, go play with a misfunctionnal lawnmover. (thanks to Shas-o for that one. ^_^).

Anyway, comment are always welcome!

YAY!!!! You DID come! This is coming out great! Finish IT!!!

Totenmaske @ Friday, February 4th 2005, 6:19 AM
Well to quote you directly:
Q: But still, you have two unfinished sketches.
A: I, huh,... Know. Your point?

Totenmaske A: Well see the point is this, it is seen as spamming the board ? see rule 9 of Drowkaki. This is your first warning on this issue ? I am going to give you time to refine this image as well as finish the first image on the board ? if you have any trouble with either you can always email me and I?ll be happy to help. But really you should finish an image that you begin, especially since the first one can be considered gift art to Kern. Now that being said I have to agree I like the overall look of your images so far ? if you went over and refined your line art to something smoother it would be really impressive.
Btw this image is under the time limit of a minimum of 30 min ? yeah by two min, but still just have to inform you of that.

Now overall the expression of this character is fantastically rendered I really like the way you rendered the ears and well the hand gesture is very nice ? but like I have said it seems to need some refining. The colouring with this image, which I hope you will get around to ? especially after I have given you an official warning ? can be really interesting especially around the ?eye attachment. The snake is a nice touch btw ? btw the hair, you can experiment if you want to try to get an individual strand look with the application when you go to colour ? some people use highlight and burn tools. Just a little helpful info?

Now just finish your first image and then this ? and don?t forget to comment.

catboi incubus mishi @ Friday, February 4th 2005, 2:18 PM
Exactly, what Toten said. When you submit unfinished sketches, they push down other images that have been worked on a lot longer, and thus resulting in those images getting less comments. I think it would be wise for you to go over the rules once more, because this lackadaisical attitude you have about them isn't doing you any favors and also makes you look rude.

catboi incubus mishi @ Thursday, February 3rd 2005, 2:23 PM
Cute little kitty, reminds me of that one Sanrio cat, that's brown striped, you know? O: But, I think you could have tried to add more details, although it is over the time limit, it's just barely over. O:

darkrose @ Friday, February 4th 2005, 12:44 AM
Heheh, it looks like crayon <{^.^}>. Excellent. Agreed, it is only barely over the time limit, but I loves it muchly, it is unbearably cute! And colorful, and looks like a crayon drawing (which ROCKS). Welcome back!

Aww. Really cute. Would look good as a plushie. ^.^

celestial crou @ Friday, February 4th 2005, 11:38 PM
So cute! for being such a simple drawing you add alot of detail. Various shading colors and even blush! the complementary colors really help bring the figure forward.

Hmm... the name definitely sounds familiar... <{^ ^}> Welcome back! This is lovely lineart, I have to admit, and the variations of color used for shading are very lovely. A little extreme in places, but still you did a fantastic job. I like the cat eyes on the black haired one, and the eye on the red haired one is very beautifully done.. Their hair is very shiny :)... My biggest beef is really just nitpicking. The cat-eyed guy's cheekbone is highlighted in a wierd way on the side furthest from our perspective... and his hair hangs over a shiny spot without shadow on that same side. Yeah, that's all I got... this is really wonderful work! Welcome back!

Prismatic @ Thursday, February 3rd 2005, 8:16 AM
The colors you used for the skin tones are nice. And of course the multiple tones give it a lot of depth. I never have been able to shade with solids. I specifically like the red heads eye. And the shineyness of thier hair!
You're right, the line art is really well done. I'm glad you're proud of it~

I've had moments like that... my fighter, JT, only had enough gold for one room in the inn, so he bought the room for the lady they were protecting and decided to sleep outside. Now they've been having trouble with guards and wild animals like bears and wolves, so he thinks he'll sleep in a tree. He makes sure he has rope, so he can secure himself up there and make a little hammoc or something. Great plan, right? So he makes his climb, fails the first rope check, then a second rope check, and then two reflex saves (one made, one failed). What happened was as follows:

Jt climbed the tree and pulled out the rope. He managed to tie his hands together and get a little tangled before the rope coiled around the hilt of his sword and pulled it out of the sheath dangling it about five feet below him still attatched to the rope. JT leaned over to pull up the sword, lost his balance, over-corrected, and fell off the other side. The sword (yup, still on the rope) headed up towards JT as he fell, rather like a pulley system, but he managed to dodge it before he fell hard on his back on the ground. As he lay there in pain, rather winded, he failed to notice the sword coming back down after rounding the branch. It impaled him to the ground, securing him in place.

So the party finds JT bleeding to death, tied in rope, impaled by his own sword to the ground and completely unable to move. He did this completely on his own. THey have never stopped mocking him for that.

So! Great picture, I wish to see more when it is more done-like. I will actually comment on the image when that happens... I just thought you'd be amused by the story. <{^.^}>;;

EDIT: Ok, I guess I needed to address a few things here.
1) This is a Hellsing fanchar of mine, though not a defining piece, it does technically fall into the fantasy category. I\'m sorry if you disagree.

2) Where in the rules does it forbid members to post more than once per day? I\'m sorry if I\'ve done wrong, but I read the rules and it wasn\'t mentioned anywhere that I could find.

And 3) Um, I do post at least 5 comments per post, read my statusbar?

Ye Gods, I\'m sure you\'re trying to help, but it\'s rather confusing.

Interesting... Millenium... what anime was that from again? I don\'t remember... anyways, this is a beautiful image. Lovely design, I like the blood spatters. Her legs fold a little wierd, but they\'re really hard to draw and you made a fantastic effort. THe overall effect is really very good, I like it a lot. I especially love the little cuts out of the lettering... makes it look kind of rusty or something.

Still, this is your second post in the same day right in a row (see previous comment), and it's not exactly fantasty from what I can see. That's another rule, the material on this board is limited to fantasy only (which your first post was perfect for).

(Edited on January 31, 2005, 7:16 am)

catboi incubus mishi @ Monday, January 31st 2005, 2:38 PM
I agree with darkrose. I suggest you read over the rules again to see what you can and cannot do on this board and everything will be hunky-dory - also, be sure to comment on others, at least five comments for every one image you draw. ^^

Harlequin @ Tuesday, February 1st 2005, 5:24 AM
Millenium is in Hellsing. Yay Hellsing.

I like the simplicity of this, the black and white of the figure really make him or her stand out. I love the flowy motion to the hair. That's something I personally have trouble with, showing proper amounts of motion in hair. I'll have to keep this comment short as I don't really have a lot of time here, but all in all I like this, and before I forget:

WELCOME TO THE BOARD!!! *throws confetti*

Prismatic @ Thursday, February 3rd 2005, 8:18 AM
I like the pose on this. And the simplicity in color. Solids with um.. I don't know what they're called.. half-tones? is always something else I have enjoyed~

celestial crou @ Saturday, February 5th 2005, 12:06 AM
I'm sorry but i'm gonna have to disagree to who ever said this wasnt fantasy. Hellsing (right?) is a vampire manga. Hence this character is eather a slayer or a vampire or a potential victom (harle would know more i just borrow). If you look close you will notice there isnt a shadow. some vampire superstitions state that as a vampire characteristic. Like no reflection and such. Its up to the artist how much or little significance those details are. Like in art sometimes little details are the most important aspect of the piece. Giving an other wise "eye candy piece" a meaning, or moral.

So this piece is lagit. The other rules you have questions on i really dont know. I am never one to read the rules. I just had someone Summarize it. Scifi/ fantasy only. and i thnk its more common curtisy to post only once. People HAVE posted 2 in one day before. I myself infact. but i dont do it regularly. But the rules are supp[osed to be updatd now. so perhaps youll find your answers there?

NOW for this piece. The hair is beutiful. So pretty and flowing strands. reminds me of chobits. The blood draws you to the character. and the simple BG makes the black quite evident.

WELCOME TO THE BOARD!!!!!!!!!!!! I thnk once you get past 14 pics youll be used to the rules. All artists approach problems at a different angle. So dont worry so much, just express yourself in scifi and fantasy.

Welcome! Although I notice you posted two pictures in a row... we try not to do that. It pushes other people's work off the front page and makes it harder for them to get acknowledged. I like this a lot, though, you've got the shading down pat. Beautiful job making things look metallic and shiny. I think the only thing that would make this picture worlds better would be a background... something interesting. Just one thing - maybe you could make the profile more...human-ey? I don't know if it's supposed to be more muzzle-like, as you said it's a dragon person, right? But if it's a human, it sort of goes in under the nose, then out again for the lips...and I'm being very vague as I'm tired. -_-. But, uhm, yes. I hope you find your tablet pen!

Jennifer @ Sunday, January 30th 2005, 11:58 AM
This picture is so sweet and touching. I really like this, it's romantic. Your characters are very good-looking and have a sense of realism. The hero has such a tender expression. It's as if he's thinking that everything will be alright as long as she is with him. Your heroine has a more serious expression, like she is trying to figure out what happened and what they will do next. After seeing this picture, I would like to see more of their story. Great work.

This is beautiful. I love the emotion you caprtured, just by their poses and holding hands~ The softness of the shading is wonderful. I really really like his shirt super lots.

Starisan @ Monday, February 7th 2005, 3:15 PM
you have wonderful realism here, the lighting is fantastic as a soft glow. I love her face!

Queen_Godzilla @ Saturday, March 5th 2005, 12:19 AM
A lot better, yes. Definitely. It has a good composition, good coloration, proportions, etc.

If I tilt my head the direction each of their heads is facing, I can see little facial details that have gone out of line. Mostly it's just one eye on each of them. No big deal. And the rest of their anatomies are perfect as far as I cna see.

Other than that -- I don't see much shadows in here. I know one source is blue light and it's from behind them, and I know one source is yellow/bone nad coming from the right, but... I think sometimes you're using blue shadows and that throws me off as to whether it's a highlight or shadow. Tisk, tisk.

I recently saw the new Phantom of the Opera movie, and I've just been DYING to do fanart for it - and here it is, so far. <3333
All done. (:

Ack! Idea stealer! Aah! Well damn. Ah, well... beautiful BEAUTIFUL picture. I was so rooting for Christine to end up with the Phantom... why does the prettyboy always have to win, eh? So anyways, I love the muted shading, it's so very appropriate and the candles in the background are fantastic. They really fit the theme too, it's just the perfect background with enough detail to make it purdy. *sigh* So tender... grr. *mumblemumbleprettyboysgetalltheluckmumble*

Sumi @ Saturday, January 29th 2005, 11:09 PM
The movie looks really good, but I haven't seen it yet. ~_~ Goin' to see it in NY this spring. Very nice candlelight and you did a great job with their hands. I really love the frilly edges on Christine's? dress and the detail you did around the Phantom's neckline. =3

Hoshizah! I've absolutely fallen in love with the Phantom of the Opera lately. Completely in love. This is gorgeous fanart, Mishi. Gorgeous.

*worships Mishi*
Saw this movie last week and I still can't get some of the songs out of my head.
I have been waiting to see your finished picture from the moment I saw your lineart yesterday afternoon. I knew it would be beautiful then and it is even better than I expected. The Phantom's tender embrace of Christine is so very sweet, yet possessive at the same time.
I like the Phantom and Christine pairing, but I also like the coupling of Raoul and Christine. Both have different outcomes in Christine's life.
Love. Love. Love your picture, Mishi.

christabel @ Sunday, January 30th 2005, 9:38 PM
Uwah! That's so loverly! *bouncebouncebounce* I totally adore the blurry candles in zer background-- and zer posing = excellent! o.o They both look so wistful. His face is especially wonderful.

I must see this! <3

I wish I would've seen the movie before commenting, but since you insisted so much...

Anyway, very romantic. It's nice to see how close to each other the characters are in the pic. ^w^ (I dunno if they're as close in the movie... hmmm...) and the outfits are very nicely drawn too. ^w^ But what I like the most is the candles in the background! You did such a great lighting job on them! It's incredible! ^w^

I hope you're happy now that I commented. XD

Prismatic @ Friday, February 4th 2005, 6:59 PM
Oh! I've really been wanting to see that movie too. This is really nice. The candles.. .wow! I really like how you blurred the background in that way, it makes it seem like this piece was a photograph, and the focus was on those in the foreground.
They look really good together. I like all the pretty details in their clothing.~

darkrose @ Saturday, January 29th 2005, 10:28 PM
Could be better, yes. But there are a lot of good things here, the character concept is quite nifty and you put detail on the blouse that looks like embroidery. The colors are nice, I love the colors. The fabric is what bothers me most, I think... it doesn't quite fold right. His face is good, his hair is good, now you need to work on fabrics and perhaps hands, although you made an excellent attempt at those weird hand gestures for making seals. In any case, this looks really not bad overall, a little working out of details things and it'll be really great.

christabel @ Sunday, January 30th 2005, 9:39 PM
XD Dude. I totally understand rushing because you're sleepy.

I really dig what you did with the background! and the face is done quite well! :d Also, I like that you added detailing to his shirt ^^ It adds so much.

Skittles-chan @ Tuesday, February 1st 2005, 12:18 AM
I like the concept, and the embroidery. He's a bit too stiff, though. For a character like this I would do something more dynamic. And there's a distinct lack of shading on his skin, particularly his stomach, considering how much is on his clothing, and that the talisman is apparently glowing.

Kwetha @ Wednesday, February 2nd 2005, 9:10 PM
I really like the character design in this, but maybe you cuold have done a little more shading? like, using darker and lighter colours and more mid-tones maybe. That being said, I really like what you did with the hair, and your lineart is so clean! In shi painter I just go "whee! sketchy! scribbley! Yay!" and I also like the detail on his shirt thing, that's very nifty. It's just the lack of shading bothering me really, as this would be really, really cool with just a bit more, especially on the clothes and skin.

Prismatic @ Sunday, February 6th 2005, 10:49 PM
I like the colors you used in this piece. A sort of sunsetty background with wispy clouds. The shape of their face and positioning of their features looks nice. I like the eyes in particular. Maybe a wee bit of shading on the skin would of added a little more dimension to them. Pretty staff! I wouldn't mind having one like that.~

Jennifer @ Saturday, January 29th 2005, 7:03 PM
This is such pretty fanart. Mishi's character looks so sweet as she's reading her recipe book. I love the details you put into this. The cookbook looks worn and well used. I like that you put diagrams onto the pages, it gives the book realism.

darkrose @ Saturday, January 29th 2005, 10:32 PM
I love how many details you pay attention to. Things like the textures of everything from metal to wood to leather to terrycloth and paper, the lighting (complete with little dust speckles giving the room a very homely feel), the composition (something interesting in every part of the picture but the lines and general focus are drawn to the main figure {or perhaps the book...}). This feels like a real place that really exists, which I think is important in a good picture. Helps people relate to it more. If I could critique anything at all it would be her face.. it appears that her chin is tilded down, her focus is on the book, and everything about her posture indicates the tilting of the chin except her hair, which still seems to be in the position of a fully level chin. Maybe if you took the hairline down a little bit it would help, but only if that was indeed what you were going for. Like I said, this is fantastic. Excellent work.

Basil @ Sunday, January 30th 2005, 2:11 AM

I mean wow, from the stains on the towel and the writing in the book, to the folded peieces of paper in it and the planking on the wood. Even the knives have a lot of detail~
I love her pose and expression. And her outfit! Especially the sleeves. I want some like that now.
The background is beautiful. and you can even see the particals of dust in the sunlight~ I think this is one of my favorites of yours.~

Queen_Godzilla @ Saturday, March 5th 2005, 12:08 AM
Man, I seriously can't find anything wrong with this.

It's a very strong composition. Gypsy girl isn't standing around staring off into space, she's tying on an apron and getting ready to cook. It has implied action!

Not only that, but the textures. My. GOD. The slats on the wooden table, the fluffy towel, the crackled pages, her be-wrinkled clothes, the glass jars, the motes and the light! Holy HELL, Sumi.

Ah, I found something -- the window light should reflect more on the surrounding area. Including gypsy. Other than, that... DAMN.

I adulted this because I really don't like the way it looks right now, I deleted the other picture because I lost my concept and forgot to put in the background early and for some reason when I save, the layers automatically combine so I can't go back behind something. I'm gonna see if I can save this one though...

catboi incubus mishi @ Friday, January 28th 2005, 3:38 PM
I don't understand why it automatically merges the layers when you submit, that's never happened to me before. o __o; This image kind of scares me, just a bit. xD;; Reminds me of Grandmother Willow in Pocahontas.

yay, tree spirits. Lovely job texturing here, I love the colors in the bark. It looks like real watercolor. Her face is sort of backlit, which is even more awesome, and it really shows the moonlight. The lighting on this is seriously just perfect... the features kind of stick out a bit because they're so much in contrast in style with the rest of the piece, it might have been good to make them watercolor instead of pencil, but this is still fantastic.

catboi incubus mishi @ Friday, January 28th 2005, 3:36 PM

darkrose @ Friday, January 28th 2005, 8:21 PM

Ooh! Shiney picture! I *love* the eyes. I want to steal them, and then I'd claim that I'd drawn them, and be egotistical. This is a really nice piece, in other words. Uhm, but there's a kinda lack of shading in her collar - was that intentional or did you forget? Also, there's some colour bleeding...it'd be nice if it was cleaned up a bit, because this is a really nice picture and it just detracts a bit. But the eyes, the eyes!

Queen_Godzilla @ Friday, March 4th 2005, 11:49 PM
Acorn, eh? I like her name.

The first thing I noticed, and the thing that made me want to comment, was her coloration. We don't get a lot of green-skinned, blue-haired girls around here. This is what really set her off from the rest of the pictures.

The second thing that made me want to comment was her face. Her wide, googly eyes and her pouty lips -- oh yes. Very good. There aren't any eyebrows that I can see, but I don't care. XD Her expression is one that kind of looks vacantly shocked. Like she's seeing something that looks weird and she doesn't know what it is.

The only thing I'd watch out is how ears connect to the head. The bottom of the ear is level with the bottom of the nose, and the top of the ear is level with the eyebrow. It doesn't really work on anime that well (I can attest to that) but... yeah. XD; Her ear is just kind of strangely connect to her head, like it's sticking out of her cheek -- all you'd need to do is add a line from her jaw to her ear ridge there. Or something like it. I dunno XD;

Such clean lines, and the background looks great. ^^ Love her jewellery.

Queen_Godzilla @ Friday, March 4th 2005, 10:56 PM
My opinion? WAY TOO MUCH LIKE JASMINE! Shake it up a little -- give her a sari (it's a hindu garment) or, like, tulle sleeves or some giant earring hoops, or some head jewels, make her hair into pigtails or an afro, or just make it short hair. SOMETHING to make it more different from Jasmine. I mean, honestly. I know you're trying to go for middle eastern, but there are SO MANY more references than just Jasmine.

Other than that...

Proportions are off-kilter. Her ribcage needs to be wider, as wide as her hips. And her arms/shoulders are also disproportionate and skewed. From the neck to the shoulder there's a slanting muscle, and it kinda makes the neck/head/collarbone area look like the shape of a coat hanger. Keep that in mind. As for her arms, slightly lumpish. Start wide at the top of each joint and slim down to the next; also make sure that the forearm and arm are the same length.

As for the design part of the piece -- waaaaay too much wasted space. You could have done a lot more with the background. Seriously.

And lastly, the highlights and shadows. You merely put shadow on one side and highlight on the other. What that did was made her look embossed rather than three dimensional. Bas relief versus sculpture. You need to think of where the light hits and adjust the light/shadow accordingly. It's hard at first, but you'll get it soon enough.

Pick a spot the light is coming from and post an arrow showing its direction. Then, using that arrow as a guide, decide where the light would hit it. Where the light WOULDN'T hit would be where you put the shadows. Depending on how much light is reaching one place, you adjust the darkness and lightness of the shadow or highlight accordingly. Voila.
