Drowkaki was finally upgraded to Poteto 5.1 then to Wax Poteto. A much needed upgrade after so many years without change and with all these bugs plaguing us. We had to trash our custom MODS but it seem that wax poteto include some of the stuff we had. Avatar(go in your profile) and picture uploading. It also come with some new features as well. The most important one is to be able to re-touch everything, including SHI-PAINTER pictures , non animated oekaki and uploaded stuff. I'm sorry we didn't do this upgrade sooner. Now the board is pretty much lifeless, but i hope now that approving new accountsl became optional, that some life will return around here on this fantasy-only oekaki board.

Since I got my new computer but haven't got any art programs on it and my main computer isn't set up, oekaki is sort of my only way to do digital art. So, I painted this. And that's all there is to it.

I just picked names for no reason. :D

Character from an ongoing project... He\'s supposed to have lots of piercings and tattoos but I didn\'t want to risk destroying the initial image by adding them and then changing my mind about designs and stuff, so I\'m saving it at this point for now and I\'ll play with some tattoo setups in retouch. :)

EDIT: Added in first pass for tattoos.

There's such a sad, melancholy feeling to the picture... or a longing of some sort. I suppose it's the way the character is so blueish (well, purplish) and facing away from the warmth of the floor. She's an adorable character.

dorothyblueeyes @ Sunday, September 17th 2006, 4:28 PM

Well,I went to the website,.and tried to sketch the characters from "Pom Poko",which were delightful.Wish I could see the movie; From black & white sketch of them,I did this simple painting. The muzzle(the light area on the face)does not stand out enough, though.Plus, very hard to contour and shape him.(her?)owww,I think I got the head shape wrong. I still do better with real drawing tools, paper, pencil, than I do software.I do not often copy other people's cartoon characters, either. These, however, from the movie are so delightful, wonderful,I wish I could do a better job. I invite others here to trydoing characters from these movies, causemany of you are more accurate than I am,with software; go ahead, give it a try, this "Pom Poko"has delightful little critters in it, I love them.

dorothyblueeyes @ Wednesday, September 27th 2006, 2:49 AM
Uh, could someone please tell me if this is a bad job, or are these characters just kind of hard to do? comments, at all? It's ok if you are critical but not to be mean. I accept criticism.

Piccolo @ Saturday, September 30th 2006, 8:52 PM
My first suggestion would be that if you don't think the muzzle stands out enough, then add something to it and try to make it stand out more. Maybe showing more shading on the underside of it (the lower right I'm guessing would be where the shadow would fall) and some highlights. You could also put the shadow that the muzzle would cause on the face into the picture, because then you would get the idea that it comes out from the face. I don't know these characters so I couldn't tell you if they're easy to draw, but I always find it very hard to draw someone else's characters and to make them come out right. One trick that works for me is to keep in mind the personality of the character I'm drawing and really try to bring that out. That way even if the little details aren't right the feeling of the picture as a whole usually works out.
I hope that was helpful.

dorothyblueeyes @ Thursday, October 5th 2006, 5:14 AM
Thank you for the comment;yes,I find it hard to do someone else's characters, too.

And I assure you, its fantasy.

And holy cow I havent been on here in foreeeever.

Anyway, onto pic description:

Girl = Erios McCharlan, Highschool Student, Art Major, Grade 12.

Guy = Jason Ergan, Highschool Student [transfer], Journalism Major, Grade 12. (This is not his final design...Im still not quite satisfied)

The jist of the story is 12 teenagers are given these powers because the "Emblem of the Zodiac" split itself apart into its twelve respective pieces in order to keep itself out of evil hands.

The main cast [12 characters] are each granted a respective piece. Erios has the Leo piece and is granted the power of controlling and summoning fire. She can also transform into a large anthropomorphic firey lion in extreme situations [think of it as a VERY COSTLY limit break...]. She has a younger sister, Sharice, a little hopeless romantic of a cyber punk girl. Their mother is a local hairdresser and esthetician, all three run a small salon where Erios sells her paintings and other misc. pieces of art, Sharice maintains the store and all its electronics/computers, and mum obviously does the hair cutting etc. etc.

Jason is a transfer student from another highschool. Which? No one really knows. His Aunt is the new principal of Black River High [Black River is the little town the comic takes place in]. He's majoring in Journalism, and is rarely seen without a camera with him. He's fascinated by the small town because of its rather ecclectic and laid back feel. Not to mention the amount of pratictioners of the spiritual arts [fortune tellers, tarot readers, astrologers, and all sorts of different 'magic' shops]. Jason is important because he has the ability to 'sense' where the Zodiac peices are. Though he doesnt know it himself.

He and Erios eventually fall in love, but they have serious problems due to Erios' rather reclusive nature. She tends to stick to herself alot and doesnt talk much to any one else except for Sharice, and her best friend, Staci [who just so happens to have the Capricorn piece.]. Erios has a nasty history with her last boyfriend, and tries to avoid any involvement with the opposite sex because of it. She and Jason just start off as friends, but slowly their relationship grows into more the more Jason finds out about her and her sad past.

But all is not happy, and they have to go through some pretty heavy trials themselves. Discovering each others powers, and what that could me for them, their relationship, and for the rest of the cast of Emblem of the Zodiac: First Revolutions.

Okay, I think thats enough writing for now.

The scene is quite dramatic, and the two persons' expression fit pretty well.
I think it's sad that the background is so basic.

Tenshi @ Friday, August 25th 2006, 2:22 PM
I did the background plainly and in greyscale to represent the dismal state of the highschool, and how it seems dead and lifeless to Erios.

It pretty much represents how much she hates it

Jennifer, The Blue Narian @ Monday, September 4th 2006, 5:53 PM
My apoligies, but all I can do when I look at Jason is think "RAT NOSE!" And no, that is NOT an insult. It is a compliment! It brings back found, nestalgic memories of an old Canadian cartoon called Rock and Rule that had a similar style. And the trm rat nose is applied because one of the main characters was a rat named Omar... and Jason looks similar to him. ^_^ Thank you so much fo the resulting warm fuzzy feeling!

*gasp* I'm alive!

...Maybe you're wondering how this could fit in fantasy or sci-fi, but try to actually have a hairstyle like that (unless your hair stylist can really do those crazy Star Wars hairstyles) and you'll understand why I think this can't be anything but fantasy. =_=;

Basically just a stress relief drawing, I wasn't really sure what I was drawing but it came out not too shabbyyy. Oh and of course I didn't take that long to do it... I worked on it on and off for like 3 days... but mostly off, I kept doing other things and kicking myself in the butt to finish this. x_x

Perfect magical shininess! Superb usage of tones. ^^ I just love how it's so clean and there's different line thickness... it's kind of like stained glass. Beautiful work!

Haha, I think he had a patch on his face... I can't rememeber, but it looks like him otherwise. He was the coolest character minus the Barron. Nice job <3

dorothyblueeyes @ Wednesday, September 27th 2006, 2:47 AM
Thanks, I did not see the patch on the original drawing, but he must be a fearsome cat, huh?

Piccolo @ Saturday, September 30th 2006, 8:19 PM
Muta is so much fun in the movie and you totally caught his attitude, reminds me of the part in the movie where he gets sat on. Nice picture!

DinKelion @ Monday, September 25th 2006, 2:30 PM
Uh, It certainly doesn't radiate a :cute: look. I think it's leaning more to a bad-ass kind of appearance. I can almost imagine one of those fine claws flipping the veiwers off. :3 lol, good picture any ways!

Very good ,don't worry about it, we like it.

Piccolo @ Saturday, September 30th 2006, 8:17 PM
Very fun picture, well, fun might not be the right word. Reminds me of all those cartoons where the characters use bearskin rugs to scare others. I like how he's like checking out his claws too!

He is, to my modest opinion, the greatest comic character ever. I fell in love with him as much as it is possible to fall in love with a fictionnal character. ^_^

Piccolo @ Saturday, September 30th 2006, 8:13 PM
This is fun! The tones are pretty sweet. One little thing that bothers me though is that his neck line stops before the bottom of the page and that in some places I don't feel the shadows are deep enough. I think you did a great job on the shape of the profile though, looks awesome!

Rrrrr...I still can't quite get this drawing on the computer thing down but I guess that I just need practice. So here's a rough picture of some lady sleeping...

Arisu @ Friday, June 23rd 2006, 7:45 PM
It's okay. You're right- everything gets better with practice. If you haven't been drawing on the comp long then you are already -loads- better than i was. You're spending a good amount of time on your pictures so no worries.

What really helps is: Find a photo/good drawing you would like to copy, and do your best to draw exactly what's in that picture. It'll speed up the perfecting of your hand-eye-computer coordination.

christabel @ Sunday, July 16th 2006, 11:29 AM
Oh! The dragonfly pic looks really nice also! I love the iridescence in a big way!

One suggestion for the background -- I think it would be a good idea to cover up the white bg entirely (with green or blue, for example) before starting on your details.

p.s. That's really awesome for a third oekaki! I think if you can e-mail the wonderful Sumi and ask her to post the pic here, if that's what you want. :d

Madea @ Sunday, July 16th 2006, 12:24 PM
Thank you!! Georg luffs his cheesecake. As for the dragonfly, I did email Sumi and am waiting for a reply. I will, of course, take your suggestions to heart in the future! I'm just really bad at backgrounds because I never do them. =D Also; I tried emailing YOU, but it was returned. ;_;

KHatch @ Tuesday, July 18th 2006, 10:39 PM
Ha, the expression rocks. Good simple shading too, I always have to get SO detailed and it makes me mad.

Yeah something to try, watch an animation of mine once, see how I do the BG colours first then the main colour on top. It helps a lot and gets rid of that distracting white! Other than that, this is so cute. I love cheesecake too. ^_^

Little Elf @ Thursday, July 20th 2006, 7:15 PM

Well talk about intricate work there.. that shading is done with solids?! All I can say is niiiiice. :)

Madea @ Monday, July 17th 2006, 7:47 PM
;_; I'd say thank you for the glowing comment - you are one of my personal art heros here - but I can't claim credit... the conversion to jpg made it lose some of the detailing, I used about six layers of watercolor shading to get the effect, but it's watercolor... so... thank you so much!! but, the reload apparently made me look cooler than I am. ^_^;;;

Arisu @ Monday, July 17th 2006, 9:39 PM
Haha! Compression sucks. :P Well the reason I thought the "solids" were so impressive in the first place is because you've obviously put in so many different layers of color.. (that takes serious patience and a hand for detail!) so the fact that you really did 'em with watercolor makes no difference. It's niiiiice no matter what.

Great insect anatomy too. :D
